OK..."Lord Valve" YOU ASKED FOR IT!!
First of all, the 1933 "Model B" organ was designed to be bought by a poor
church that couldn't afford a pipe organ! The X77 was designed in the late
60s for PROFESSIONAL musicians who want to do more than JUST SHOW OFF AND
HURT PEOPLE'S EARS!!
String Bass...obviously you haven't played the X77. TG being "Loud as

That is amazing the "B" being manufactured before the model "A"

In fact, the first Hammond with a "B" in it was the BC, :manufactured from

From my recollection your "Model A" cabinet design...the conceptual

I don't know if he has an email on it, but for X77 info, he is probably the

I don't give a shit if it has tonewheels in it.

All I care about is how it sounds. A tonewheel generator
is simply a set of small AC generators driven by a central
shaft; at the time, it was the best way to do things. (It was
a shrunken version of the Telharmonium, which had to
be hauled around on a *train*.) If you think a tonewheel

Sir, it is apparent you know the personalities and just posted to cause
trouble. Probably knows Hayton from the Hamster list that didn't like
something Valve wrote. Maybe the same one or two people from CA who come in
here (along with the better posters from CA) that is offended by some
rhetoric written, and either start whining with righteous indignation or
trying to start a flame war - the last one I filtered it was so dumb. I
notice too he illiminated my remarks from his replies to *my* posts, so
apparently has an 'ax to grind' with me too.

The person he mentions is not perfect either, being on the receiving end of
flames when he was sticking up for OF a couple years ago or so. No sense
bringing it up again - a while back.

*I would suggest to go back to Hamster* (where he knows Hayton "while back")
and have a Lib-fest.

Yeah, I know - you never heard of it - just heard of Valve and Hayton and
know, know of, them.

You are revealed.

Hi

I was lucky (?) enuff to have a very quick go on an X 77 about 10 years
ago - I couldnt really get to grips with it in the time allowed as it
were - but the sheer size of the thing made it impractical for anything
other than home use - and it also had two MASSIVE rotary cabs with it
that I wasnt overly keen on (the sound of that is - it might just have
been an X 77 in need of some TLC)

I seem to remember that Groove Holmes recorded an entire LP on an X 77
in the 70's- but I havent heard it so cant comment further - but Groove
was so utterly brilliant he could make a Bontempi sound fantastic!!

Thats no help at all is it?!!!

I believe what you experienced in your X77 try out was a problem of
ORGAN--NO GUTS!! This can absolutely be fixed by performing the Hammond
Factory mods. Also...wrap you head around this!
How about adding (To stock X77)a B3 vibrato scanner, line box and "Art
Tube" preamps. Furthermore, changed the leslie's bottom rotor motor to 2
speed & cut out the annoying space generator...UGH! not needed! Try...B3
on steroids! FYI...2 150 watt leslies is insane, try one...wired
properly...AHHH thats better.
By the By...what do you have???

Well - you might be right about that..but as I gig alot an even bigger
Hammond isnt practical for me!
My rig is a 1961 C3 and 122 Leslie - its a very 'British' Hammond - as
it was assembled 'under licence' by historic British instrument
manfacturers Boosey & Hawkes - who used to ship in the parts from
Chicago and build them here before Hammond had its own permamant
presence here is the UK....

And it really is a lovely looking and sounding C3 - it was like new
when i bought it - never gigged - never been in s studio (until I got
my grubby mits on it)

Ive had it split (sniff) didnt want to - but I had to - I couldnt even
get it through the door of my house when it was whole.. Its fully wired
up with bass pedals - although it does also have jack output as I often
like to go through a straight amp as I am a massive fan of Brian Augers
playing - and part of his unique sound is that he dont use them
Leslies!! And the fact that he is one of the nicest people Ive ever met
- and a musical/keyboard genius - thats the bit Im still working on!

Since I bought it (for £650 in 1991!!!) Ive hired it to Jimmy Smith,
Brian Auger, Dr Lonnie Smith, Rueben Wilson, Bobby Watley of Funk Inc,
Big John Patton, great NY organist Adam Scone - of the Sugarman 3 and
Lou Donaldson Qrt - the UK's J.T.Q..and some very hip other people!

Of course - there are those who say I am mad to bother to gig with the
real deal these days - and that contemporary clones are now just as
good...well they might be..but I just love all the hassle..I must be a
masochist...there... Ive said it!

Hmmmm, nice post Bill.
DON'T let ANYONE tell you that a bunch of chips can duplicate the TRUE
sound of a B3.
Oh sure, they can duplicate the basic tonality, and a reasonable
representation of Hammond's vibrato scanner sound...BUT. Theirs DOES NOT
have the DYNAMIC RANGE that ONLY comes from a valve driven/air capacitor
volume system. And the A0-28 precussion drive is a whole tone generator in
itself!
FYI, re the Hammond too big problem. YUP, I solved that one COLD. Took 450
hours of my spare time...but here's what I end up with. By the way, most
of this time was designing.
Console section = manuals+associated stuff ONLY.
Bottom section = TG + A0-28 preamp etc etc
Bottom section has (6) 15 pin cinch jones sockets, and the Console section
has plugs on short cables that connect to these. NOTE: NO 120VAC in
Console section! Custom built two part case system...a dead ringer for a
Fender Rhodes!
Weight is...Console section 135 LBS
Bottom section 140LBS
Cabinet Finish...ebony black & stainless steel!
THERE IS NO HUMM, NO CROSSTALK!
PS: yes there are 25 note B3 pedals

Speakeasy preamps for clones are built just about exactly like the back-end
of an Ao-28, some cite "exactly". Some who have bought the XK3 say that it
is so good a B3 sound that a tube preamp is not necessary and find the solid
state 1122 kits acceptable.

You are responding to a THIRTEEN YEAR-OLD POST.
The idiot who posted originally probably hasn't
been on this NG in over a decade. Be that as it
may, the X-77 was a screamin' piece of shit in
2005, it's still a screamin' piece of shit in 2018,
and it always will be.
